Tim Brown, the charismatic CEO of global innovation and strategy firm IDEO and a board director of IDEO.org, took to his “influencer” pages of LinkedIn this week to announce the opening of Kenya’s first SmartLife clean water store. Brown’s regular missives on LinkedIn have already attracted over 150,000 followers, in this case spreading the word of about one of IDEO.org’s early projects.
Last spring, IDEO.org partnered with Unilever, Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) to design a sustainable social enterprise in Kenya that combines the sale of clean drinking water with hygiene and nutrition products such as vitamins for children. After nine months of hard work, the first pilot SmartLife store opened this month in Nairobi.
