Contract Magazine’s Butaro Hospital cover story

Contract Magazine is only the latest publication to hail the Butaro Hospital, the extraordinary project and work of MASS Design Group and Partners in Health in Rwanda, but the first to put the hospital on its cover. The magazine’s 2011 Healthcare Environment Awards also named the hospital winner of the Acute Care Facility category–to be conferred next month. Written by Contract‘s editor-in-chief, John Czarnecki, the cover story includes a detailed overview of the Butaro Hospital, quotes from MASS co-founders Michael Murphy and Alan Ricks, as well as a slideshow with photographs by Iwan Baan.

As Czarnecki reports, “Ricks points to this project’s wider lessons for the role of architects. ‘For me, this project demonstrates the instrumental role that architects provide as translators and planners,’ Ricks says. ‘Architects are uniquely capable of studying and interpreting what the problem is, as well as how the well-built environment plays a role in addressing it.’”
