One of Many High Line Back Stories

The pro bono and public interest design work of Pentagram could easily constitute its own blog, and will no doubt populate this one over time. Thankfully, Pentagram maintains an exceptional blog of all of its work, with thoughtful commentary and always-striking images. Since Pentagram’s founding, the firm, its partners, staff, and former employees have undertaken an array of public interest design projects. Among many others were custom identities for an astounding 56 New York public school libraries that received complete makeovers through the late, great Robin Hood L!brary Initiative.

As rave reviews and photos of the newly-opened Section 2 of the High Line are published this month, Paula Scher recounts Pentagram’s early identity work for Friends of the High Line, dating back to 2001. The story alone is precious, but the dozens upon dozens of subsequent uses and interpretations of that original High Line identity is nothing short of extraordinary. A great many of them are cataloged in Scher’s recent blog post, and each image can be enlarged with a simple click. The image above is little more than a 2009 benefit invitation, but seems to capture well the beauty and intricacy of the High Line.
